Pas de doute, l’exquise Loïse a le génie de la sottise. Mais quand donc fera-t-elle preuve de raison ? Car le 18 mai de cette année 1930, il faut que l’impossible enfant soit raisonnable, polie et présentable pour une soirée qui s’annonce… royale ! Promptement, la fille est emmenée chez un certain Dr. Spongiak. Très vanté à la radio, il semblerait que ce génial inventeur, à la pointe de la technologie, ait la solution pour que fleurisse l’âge de raison…La Méthode du Dr. Spongiak est un spectacle d’ombres rétroprojetées : les personnages s’animent sur un large écran faisant office de page blanche. Tout en suivant les rebondissements de l’histoire, les spectateur·rice·s assistent aux manipulations des comédiennes et du musicien. Cette élaboration à vue du spectacle, sorte de cinéma artisanal, éveille par touches, la poésie particulière des lanternes magiques…

In Conversation: Fien Troch

La conversation en compagnie de Fien Troch sera l’occasion d’aborder avec la scénariste et réalisatrice des motifs récurrents de son cinéma tels que les cellules familiales dysfonctionnelles et ses déclinaisons, le fossé générationnel qui existe entre des enfances sacrifiées et des adultes incapables de communiquer ou encore l’adolescence et ses zones d’ombre. La réflexion sur son rapport singulier au temps (qui lui vaut d’ailleurs d’être qualifiée de « cinéaste du temps-mort » par la critique) et à l’espace ouvrira sur l’analyse de ses partis-pris formels, et la manière dont Fien Troch réinvente de film en film sa mise en scène pour donner corps aux récits qu’elle déploie. L’échange portera aussi sur la conception de ses univers audiovisuels où cohabitent l’austérité et l’absurde, le malaise et l’espoir, et où l’humour se fraie parfois un chemin dans l’obscurité, contribuant à rendre les ambiances des fictions de Fien Troch si spécifiques.
Conversation animée, en français, par la critique et journaliste de cinéma Katia Peignois (rédactrice pour Surimpressions et chroniqueuse cinéma/séries dans l’émission Entrez sans frapper sur La Première).

Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, a strict political regime effected Iranian cinema by imposing a strong censorship which forced filmmakers to adapt their work. Probably the most internationally acclaimed director who gained international fame during this period is Abbas Kiarostami. Based on his early pre-Islamic revolution work, this symposium takes a look at Kiarostami’s artistic evolution and the broader context of The Report during the last years before the revolution. This film is not just a film but a critical commentary on the individual's struggle against systemic constraints. Its power lies in the raw, unadorned depiction of everyday life, a hallmark of his later masterpieces.

Autrement, la Molussie

Prisoners in an imaginary fascist state, Molussia, tell each other stories about the outside world as political and philosophical fables. The film is based on fragments from The Molussian Catacomb, a German novel written between 1932 and 1936 by Günther Anders. Screening introduced by Nicolas Rey (director).

The film program is meant to evoke the universe of Loti, through films that were shot during his lifetime, touching upon the many places to which he travelled, and echoing his formative times at military school and with close friends. It also contains some short fiction films with settings and stories similar to Loti’s own fictional writings. Despite many of his novels having been adapted to the cinema even during his lifetime, and his eagerness to have himself photographed, often in exotic costume, no film footage of Loti is known to exist. The lecture is illustrated with many photographs from Loti's life providing a chronology to his achievements and serves to connect the dots between him and the archival footage selected from Eye Filmmuseum's collection.
