In September, Brian De Palma turned 85, and we at Cineflagey don’t want to let that pass unnoticed. He is one of the leading directors of the New Hollywood generation (Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, etc.) and the one who, like no other, strives for pure cinema. In addition to Phantom of the Paradise (1974) – which we are screening alongside that other iconic horror musical, Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – we are starting our cycle with the three films of which De Palma himself is most proud: Blow Out (1981), Scarface (1983) and Casualties of War (1989). He is best known for his thrillers, but as this selection immediately shows (rock opera, thriller, gangster film, and Vietnam War drama), he is more versatile than he is commonly recognised for. We will continue this series in January with Dressed to Kill (1980) and The Untouchables (1987).
