Through these dossiers, we want to provide a space on our website to share additional context about our film programs, featured filmmakers, and internal initiatives. The thematic and educational focus may range from providing historical background or film-theoretical insights on genres and techniques, to exploring issues related to gender, racism, and the broader impact of film on representation.
The Royal Belgian Film Archive collects and preserves a unique collection of films and has one of the richest and most diverse film collections in Europe (including countless non-fiction films and newsreels), which combined form a real visual memory of our history. Despite the focus within CINEMATEK on the Belgian film heritage, the archive has a large collection of international masterpieces from film history.
CINEMATEK is an international film archive with a focus on Belgian, regional cinema; ‘local in an international context’. As a scientific institution, we want to share our archive and know-how with partners in the research field. As an institution of public utility, we want to share our passion for cinema with a broad educational and direct audience action.
CINEMATEK – Royal Film Archive of Belgium is a Public Utility Foundation. It is a bicultural institution, targeting both communities. The institution is subsidized by the Federal Ministry of Science Policy and also enjoys permanent support from the National Lottery. Together with various partners, CINEMATEK is the starting point to discover the “Belgian cinema”.
Supporting CINEMATEK means supporting an institution that preserves, restores and shares an essential part of our cultural heritage. Every year, the National Lottery contributes to initiatives that support cultural life in Belgium, and its commitment to CINEMATEK is fully in line with this public interest mission.
