Michel Lorand
Music as an image of time

Michel Lorand’s films and installations, constructed as cinematic gestures inspired by musical works written by the great composers from Baroque to contemporary, concern the temporal relationship between sound and moving image. Time is envisaged as a sensitive element providing a view of an unexpected reality: the eye hears and the ear sees. The filmed performances are part of a process of duration, of waiting, of remembering, and forgetting. In each film, time is linked to the exploration of a musical composition. Lorand revisits the works of both Johann Sebastian Bach and François Couperin, but also of John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Peter Ablinger.

This program will give space to the publication La musique comme image du temps, covering all the films and installations created by Michel Lorand over the last ten years, with the contributions of Larisa Dryansky, G. Douglas Barrett and Alain Franco. A presentation of the book and screenings will take place in parallel at WIELS, Centre of Contemporary Art.
