CLASSICS & ANTHOLOGIES
Francis Ford Coppola
Nicknamed “the Napoleon of cinema” due to the sometimes excessive, even megalomaniacal ambition of his projects, Francis Ford Coppola is undoubtedly one of the greatest American filmmakers of the post-war era. He played a key role in the New Hollywood movement, which, by giving directors more creative control within major studios, significantly modernized Hollywood film production from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
At just ten years old, Coppola was already making amateur films with his father’s camera. A decade later, he studied filmmaking at UCLA, where he befriended Jim Morrison, from whom he would later borrow one of his most iconic songs for the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now. Coppola quickly made a name for himself in the film industry, particularly by agreeing to direct Finian’s Rainbow, a musical starring Fred Astaire and Petula Clark. Things accelerated in 1969 when he founded the production company American Zoetrope with George Lucas. However, the project suffered an early setback with the commercial failure of Lucas’s first film, THX 1138. Ironically, this failure turned out to be a blessing for Coppola—desperate for funds, he took on a studio assignment and directed The Godfather, based on Mario Puzo’s novel. The film’s colossal success restored Coppola’s independence, allowing him to follow up with a sequel, which ultimately became part of a trilogy. The Godfather Part II won six Academy Awards, including Best Director.
That same year, Coppola directed The Conversation, a gripping thriller made on a much smaller budget, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. He then embarked on the most ambitious project of his career: Apocalypse Now, a completely insane production shot in the jungles of the Philippines. Coppola, teetering on the brink of madness amidst the chaos of an out-of-control shoot and rampant heroin use, miraculously emerged with an absolute masterpiece. The film’s immense success saved him from financial ruin. After this megalomaniacal endeavor, Coppola returned to a more modest and intimate form of filmmaking, creating the still-underrated gem One from the Heart.
Throughout the 1980s, Coppola directed films at a pace of roughly one per year, all within studio-approved budgets. By then, New Hollywood had come to an end, with studios—some narrowly avoiding bankruptcy—curbing the ambitions of the visionary directors who had once redefined American cinema. Despite this, Coppola continued to deliver personal and high-quality films, with The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, and Tucker: The Man and His Dream standing out as essential entries in his filmography.
To stabilize his finances, he accepted studio projects such as The Godfather Part III, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Jack, while also producing films for other directors, including his daughter Sofia and Tim Burton. Today, Coppola has returned with a bold cinematic vision shaped by his experience with digital filmmaking. In strikingly beautiful films like Tetro and Twixt, he explores the creative possibilities of digital technology, developing an astonishing visual style that reaches its full expression in his latest film, Megalopolis, a visually spectacular achievement.
