Fien Troch
As part of the 16th edition of the Brussels International Women’s Film Festival, Cinéfiltres is joining forces with Elles Tournent—a collective dedicated to promoting and showcasing women’s work in the audiovisual industry—for a complete retrospective of Fien Troch’s cinema.
The retrospective kicks off with a screening of three short films made during her time at film school: Verbrande aarde, Wooww, and Maria. This will be followed by her five feature films: Een ander zijn geluk, Unspoken, Kid, Home, and her most recent work, Holly.
A graduate of the LUCA School of Arts, Fien Troch has swiftly established herself as a leading voice in contemporary Flemish cinema, bringing a distinctive perspective to Belgian filmmaking. After gaining recognition for her early short films at various festivals, her feature-length films have consistently garnered accolades in Belgium, notably at the Magritte Awards, where Kid earned her the prize for Best Flemish Co-Production in 2014, and Home won Best Flemish Film in 2018. On the international stage, Home was awarded the prestigious Best Director prize in the Orizzonti section at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.
Troch’s films often center on children and teenagers facing violence, typically within dysfunctional families. Through these stories, she explores the complex power dynamics between adults and children. “If I want to examine adult behavior, its complexity and harshness, I need children as a mirror”, says Troch. These powerful themes will be addressed during the screening of Home, which will be followed by a discussion led by an organization specializing in children’s rights.
We are also excited to welcome Fien Troch for an in-depth conversation with journalist and film critic Katia Peignois. This discussion will delve into her creative process—from screenwriting to directing both professional and non-professional actors, and her technical collaborations, offering insights into the thematic and stylistic choices that define her work, as well as her artistic inspirations and influences.

La conversation en compagnie de Fien Troch sera l’occasion d’aborder avec la scénariste et réalisatrice des motifs récurrents de son cinéma tels que les cellules familiales dysfonctionnelles et ses déclinaisons, le fossé générationnel qui existe entre des enfances sacrifiées et des adultes incapables de communiquer ou encore l’adolescence et ses zones d’ombre. La réflexion sur son rapport singulier au temps (qui lui vaut d’ailleurs d’être qualifiée de « cinéaste du temps-mort » par la critique) et à l’espace ouvrira sur l’analyse de ses partis-pris formels, et la manière dont Fien Troch réinvente de film en film sa mise en scène pour donner corps aux récits qu’elle déploie. L’échange portera aussi sur la conception de ses univers audiovisuels où cohabitent l’austérité et l’absurde, le malaise et l’espoir, et où l’humour se fraie parfois un chemin dans l’obscurité, contribuant à rendre les ambiances des fictions de Fien Troch si spécifiques.
