Émilie Dequenne
Tribute

Émilie Dequenne was born on August 29, 1981, in Vaudignies in Hainaut. After enrolling in a theater class, she began to dream of cinema and auditioned for the Dardenne brothers, who were looking for the main character for their next film. Émilie Dequenne arrived wearing too much makeup and looking too polished, but once they started working, “it was magnificent. Let’s just say she was there. She had that down-to-earth quality we wanted for Rosetta”. A true sensation at the festival, Rosetta was the first of many awards the brothers would receive in Cannes, and their actress was also honored for her extraordinary performance. This first success marked the beginning of a career filled with varied roles, always carried by her fragile and intense presence and great sensitivity.

She took on dark roles for André Téchiné (La Fille du RER), Joachim Lafosse (A perdre la raison, for which she received the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard section), and Lukas Dhont (Close). She also played less troubled characters for Bertrand Blier and Lucas Belvaux in Pas son genre. She was both modest and deeply moving for Emmanuel Mouret in Les Choses qu'on dit, les choses qu'on fait, for which she won the César for Best Supporting Actress. Beyond cinema, she also made a name for herself on television, proving her ability to captivate audiences regardless of the format. “The story has to grab me, to move me”, she said. “There are so many interesting things to play that I won't turn down a role just because it’s for television rather than cinema”.

Diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2023, she was able to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rosetta in Cannes in May 2024, but the disease took her after a short remission, leaving the French-speaking cinema she had so much more to offer and the many filmmakers who deeply admired her.
