Donald Sutherland
With the passing of Canadian actor Donald Sutherland (1935-2024) last June, the film world lost one of its true legends. Sutherland was known for his incredible range, bringing both sinister villains and kind-hearted characters to life with equal skill.
He moved effortlessly between Hollywood blockbusters and daring European films, excelling in both. Whether leading a film or playing a supporting role, he had a way of commanding the screen.
One of his most memorable villain roles was as the cruel fascist Attila Mellanchini in Bertolucci’s Novecento. Anyone who has seen that epic film won’t easily forget Sutherland’s terrifying, demonic laugh. But just as convincingly, he played a gentle father in Ordinary People, trying to keep his family together after one son’s tragic death and the other’s suicide attempt. Sutherland was 35 when he landed his first major leading role in the war satire M*A*S*H. Although set during the Korean War, the film was a critique of the Vietnam War, a conflict Sutherland opposed in real life. He even participated in the FTA Show (short for "Fuck the Army"), alongside Jane Fonda, which was captured in the documentary FTA. Sutherland also starred with Fonda in the thriller Klute, playing a detective in one of his key roles.
However, the role he’s probably most remembered for is the grieving John Baxter in Don’t Look Now, a supernatural thriller directed by Nicolas Roeg and based on a story by Daphne du Maurier. The 1970s were Sutherland’s prime years, with standout performances in films like The Day of the Locust, Fellini’s Casanova, the war film The Eagle Has Landed, and the eerie Invasion of the Body Snatchers. While he continued to take on leading roles later in his career (such as in the anti-apartheid drama A Dry White Season and the thriller Citizen X), directors increasingly cast him in supporting roles. Even when his name wasn’t front and center, Sutherland often left the strongest impression, with memorable performances in JFK, Outbreak, and Ad Astra. One of his most iconic supporting roles was as President Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games franchise.
In 2017, Sutherland received an Honorary Academy Award, a recognition that felt overdue since he was never even nominated for an Oscar. Many great actors have been overlooked by the Academy (Richard Gere, Meg Ryan, Rita Hayworth, Martin Sheen...), but with Sutherland, it seems especially unfair.
