How do you pass on the repertoire of one of the greatest contemporary choreographers? In Senegal and Germany, guided by former members of the Tanztheater, a new generation of dancers is trying to make Pina Bausch’s extraordinary ballets their own. Thanks to the magic of editing and superb cinematography, the filmmaker compares the rehearsals for ‘The Rite of Spring’ at the Ecole des Sables in Dakar and ‘Iphigenia in Tauris’ at the Dresden opera. While the contrast between the two dance companies is striking, all dancers are unanimously moved by Pina’s liberating dance.
