A Film of Buddy Matsumae
Matsumae-kun no Eiga
Hiroyuki Oki, Japan 1989 ⁄ color ⁄ 180' ⁄ ST - OND: EN
Filmmaker and contemporary artist OKI Hiroyuki’s early work, stages the film itself as the site of occurrence-presence, direct address, and a shifting relation between body and frame. The frame becomes a pressure the filmed body both seeks and resists, unsettling our trust in images and asking what it means to film the real. Inverting the usual order between reality and image, the film makes the frame a place where events happen rather than a mere record.
