The Bang Straws réexamine les discriminations subies par Anna May Wong (Dahong Wang) durant les auditions de The Good Earth de Sidney Franklin. Thieves prend pour objets les deux versions du Voleur de Bagdad de 1924 et 1940 : Anna May Wong se réveille en noir et blanc, au sein d’un tournage, lui, passé au Technicolor. Avec Sabu (Krishna Istha), l’actrice organise secrètement une rebellion des laissé·es-pour-compte du cinéma. The Bang Straws et Thieves composent les premiers volets de la trilogie Critical Affection.

Chantal Akerman’s early films (La Chambre, Hotel Monterey) were influenced by the experimental American cinema of Jonas and Adolfas Mekas, Andy Warhol, Yvonne Rainer and Michael Snow’s Wavelength. At 22 years old, freshly graduated from INSAS, Patricia Canino met Chantal Akerman and Delphine Seyrig during the last edition of EXPRMNTL, also known as the Knokke Experimental Film Festival founded by Jacques Ledoux, in the beginning of 1949. It was there that she was offered the job of editing Jeanne Dielman. Patricia Canino will discuss Akerman’s inspiration drawn from experimental cinema and her close collaboration with Akerman in crafting the masterpiece Jeanne Dielman.

During her séjour in New York Akerman immersed herself in the work of the Minimalist avant-garde, acquainting herself with the contemporaneous dance and performance art, structural cinema and Minimalist music. News from Home bears witness to the profound impression the aesthetic shifts of the 1970s left on her directorial development and unveils key principles she would adhere to throughout the rest of her oeuvre. This talk examines the film in its broader art historical context to shed light on the many-faceted history behind Akerman’s austere aesthetics.

Caroline Champetier has served as director of photography for over 120 films, collaborating with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Leos Carax, Anne Fontaine and Margarete von Trotta. Her inaugural feature film in 1982 was Chantal Akerman’s Toute une nuit, a film where the city of Brussels plays a crucial role. Caroline Champetier will discuss her collaboration with Chantal Akerman, particularly after Jeanne Dielman, her experiences working with women in key functions of film production, and the process of capturing the essence of Brussels in a « mood » film.

Dean Tavoularis (born in 1932) studied architecture and art. After completing his education, he began his career at Walt Disney Studios. His first role as an Art Director was in Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967). He also served as the designer for Michelangelo Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point" (1970). Tavoularis's pivotal meeting with Francis Ford Coppola marked the start of a significant collaboration, leading to his involvement in iconic productions such as "The Godfather" trilogy (1972-1974-1990), "The Conversation," "Apocalypse Now" (1979), and "Rumble Fish" (1984). Throughout his career, Tavoularis collaborated with esteemed directors including Roman Polanski, Philip Kaufman, Nancy Meyers, William Friedkin, Wim Wenders, Diane Kurys, and Warren Beatty, among others. His achievements include winning an Academy Award for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (for "The Godfather Part II") and receiving four Academy Award nominations. He also earned a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design for Coppola's "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" (1988), as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) from the Art Actors Guild.
