Chess of the Wind
Mohamed Reza Aslani
An evening centered on the film Chess of the Wind by Mohammad Reza Aslani.
This visually striking Iranian film, which premiered in 1976, had long been forgotten. The film’s negatives were rediscovered by Aslani’s children in 2014, were then smuggled to Europe, where the Cineteca di Bologna took the initiative to restore the film. The feature is followed by a documentary about the rediscovery of the movie by Aslani’s daughter, Gita Aslani Shahrestani.

Set in the Qajar era, the film tells the story of power struggles within a wealthy household after the death of the family matriarch. The film's slow-paced, poetic storytelling and carefully composed cinematography create a haunting atmosphere. Originally screened in 1976, it was quickly banned after the Iranian Revolution and remained unseen for decades. However, in 2020, a restored version was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving international acclaim.
