Een ontsnapte gangster zoekt onderdak bij een ondertussen gehuwd ex-liefje. De spanning is te snijden op deze grijze zondag een paar jaar na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in de Londense wijk Bethnal Green. Robert Hamer, bekend van de zwarte komedie Kind Hearts and Coronets, liet zich hier inspireren door het Franse poëtisch realisme van de jaren 1930.
