Pola Negri (1897-1987), a former ballet student, became a famous film star of Polish, German and American cinema. On screen, she often interpreted the role of the femme fatale, involved in seducing dance sequences.
Screen acting manuals for the silent cinema were usually written by men. None- theless, women contributed to the definition of screen acting standards, both in Europe and in the US, since the emergence of cin- ema and their contribution was often given through dance.
By analyzing a few film sequences, Elisa Uffreduzzi will show the importance of dance in the definition of screen acting standards during the silent era, through an international perspective, especially focus- ing on Pola Negri’s case study.
