De twaalfjarige weesjongen Brendan groeit op in een abdij in Kells in het Ierland van de 9e eeuw. Nadat hij een verborgen manuscript in de abdij ontdekt, droomt hij ervan om het onvoltooide boek af te maken. Een film waarin de personages, diep verbonden met de natuur, op blote voeten door het bos lopen.
