Djibril Diop Mambéty’s stunning early work highlights his satirical eye on the iniquities of post-colonial Dakar. Contras’ City sets the self-conscious grandeur of Dakar’s colonial architecture against the sights and sounds of its local people, their ironic distance heightened by a soundtrack that veers between traditional kora and the Marseillaise. Badou Boy is even more dazzlingly inventive in its sound design, sketching a gallery of vibrant local characters into a wonderfully witty, darkly satirical play on Chaplin-esque comedy, as a policeman pursues the titular street urchin across the city.
