I love Lubitsch and even wrote a book about his silent films. (What task for a film scholar could be more enjoyable than writing about him?) Apart from film scholars and buffs, most people recognize the name only because of Ninotchka, and that probably because of Garbo. Trouble in Paradise is assumed to be his masterpiece, but The Shop Around the Corner is its equal or very close, in my opinion. A splendid rom com with a perfect balance between rom and com. A great script, played wonderfully by the supporting cast, and even more wonderfully by stars Margaret Sullavan and Jimmy Stewart. It may be a comedy, but the ending always threatens to bring tears to my eyes. – Kristin Thompson
